Lanark County Mental Health
The Perth Police Service has partnered with Lanark County Mental Health in an effort to enhance service to the public. Lanark County Mental Health provides streamlined access to a network of supports and services for adults and transitional aged youth coping with serious mental illness. The agency facilitates recovery and client-centered shared care in collaboration with local residential facilities, partners’ agencies, hospitals and family physicians.
Lanark County Mental Health referrals can come from a variety of sources including personal, physicians, police, hospitals, and community agencies. Referrals are generally dealt with at one of their office locations located in Smiths Falls and Carleton Place. their hours of service are Monday to Thursday 8 a.m. to 8 pm and Fridays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Lanark County Mental Health also provides crisis response to police services and local hospital emergency departments to complete urgent mental health assessments. As well, the agency provides other mental health services that include crisis intervention, psychiatric consultations, individual counseling, group counseling, case management or specialized services with gero-psychiatry and early intervention in psychosis(ACTT))referrals.
The Perth Police Service has partnered with Lanark County Mental Health in a very specific manner where a protocol was established in 2005 between: Lanark County Mental Health, Lanark Police Services (Ontario Provincial Police, and Smiths Falls Police Services), Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital, Carleton Place District Hospital and Almonte General Hospital, Lanark Ambulance Services and Brockville Mental Health Centre.

The protocol which is referred to as the ‘LEAD TEAM’ was established to better serve emotionally disturbed person in crisis within our community. A philosophy was agreed upon that a united collective collaborative approach between agencies and professionals within the community was needed to provide persons in mental crisis with immediate professional treatment while enhancing public safety.
Primary training has given officers exposure to the basic dynamics and the common types of mental illness along with firsthand viewpoints of the mental health consumers. The training focuses on an overview of serious mental illness, including symptoms, behaviors, risk assessments, de-escalation strategies, diversion strategies and improved recognition of persons at risk of mental health crisis. Several officers from the Perth Police have received this training since 2005.
